In 2017, Baker Mayfield put up one of the greatest college football seasons at the Quarterback position I can remember.

YearPlayerPass Yards / GameComp. %Heisman Award
2017Baker Mayfield330.5 YDS / GM70.5%Yes
2023Shedeur Sanders451.5 YDS / GM77.5%TBD

In his final year of college football, Mayfield went off for over 330 passing yards per game on his way to winning the Heisman Award and being selected as the first overall player in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Understanding the Colorado Buffaloes are only two games into their season – Shedeur Sanders, the son of the great Deion Sanders, is turning heads, much like Pops did for so many years.

Sanders, the quarterback, started the year at +15000 to win the Heisman.

If you, like all the rest of us – have become a huge fan of Shedeur and his Buffaloes – please make sure you Shop Around for your best Heisman odds.

It’s hard to believe that after only two weeks into the season, we already have a market for Shedeur Sanders with such an incredible gap.

Don’t get caught with Sanders at +1800 when a +3000 or +3500 is readily available.

Hey… Y’all Remember Me?

As the football world falls back in love with Deion Sanders and in love with Colorado football, Caleb Williams is quietly going about his business with his 5th-ranked USC Trojans.

Caleb vs. Shedeur – 2023

Caleb Williams55 of 70 (78.6)87812 : 012 for 61 YDS
Shedeur Sanders69 of 89 (77.5%)9036 : 016 for -62 YDS

Williams and his Trojans (3-0) have played three games already this year. Colorado has only played two.

In our stat comparison above, we see Williams has almost 20 fewer attempts than Sanders.

USC has dominated their opponents to the point where the reigning Heisman champ has been pulled in all three games – so the USC backup QBs can get their reps in.

The odds on Williams to repeat as the Heisman winner are much more consistent across the books compared to Sanders. There is still value to be found with BetRivers if Caleb is your guy.

Not to get too far ahead of ourselves – but Colorado and USC have a Week 5 match-up that could have huge Heisman implications.

Look, Dad – I Went Under 25 Again

I’m generally not overly passionate about football in the state of Iowa. However, I was really entertained this past week when Iowa and Iowa State played for the annual Cy-Hawk Trophy.

For those of you not yet up to speed on the Iowa Hawkeyes coaching situation this year, it’s kind of a fun one.

Most of us know Head Coach Kirk Ferentz, a local legend who has patrolled the Iowa sidelines since 1999.

The current Iowa offensive coordinator is Brian Ferentz, the son of Kirk.

Last year, Iowa finished 8-5 despite an offense that ranked second worst in the Country.

Some were surprised when Iowa returned an OC who finished outside the top 125 schools in offensive production.

A few even went so far as to suggest that maybe nepotism played a role in Brian Jr. keeping his job.

Of course, that thought never crossed our minds at BestOdds, but we did think it would be fun to follow Ferentz Jr. this year – and check in on that Iowa offense every now and then.

Iowa Offense – 2022 & 2023

Year – RecordYDS / GM RankPTS / GM RankAVG Points / Game
2022 – (8-5)129th125th17.7
2023 – (2-0)127th120th22.0
  • Iowa is averaging 259 yards of offense per game. That ranks them 127th this year, and it’s actually a slight improvement on their final ranking in 2022.
  • From a points-per-game perspective – Iowa is ahead of their average from last year, but 22 points per game just won’t cut it in 2023 – Even if IOWA GOES UNDEFEATED!

Let us explain why.

Iowa OC Brian Ferentz returned to the Hawkeyes coaching staff after a disappointing 2022 performance, but his new contract has some interesting language in it.

The Hawkeyes must average at least 25 points per game in 2023, or Ferentz will be replaced at the end of the season.

Any points scored by special teams and the defense will count for Ferentz.

So far this year, the Iowa offense is responsible for only 37 points through two weeks, but thanks to a pick-six touchdown in Week 2, they have scored 44 points total.

That is an average of 22 points per game… or a field goal short of where they need to be.

I am following this storyline because I hope it might lead to some questionable coaching decisions by someone trying to keep his job.

Wouldn’t it be fun if Iowa was up a few scores late in the fourth quarter but putting the ball at risk by throwing it every down in an effort to reach 25 points?

Yes, that would be a lot of fun.

I suspect that both Ferentz Sr. and Ferentz Jr. are too professional to allow that scenario to play out – but this type of language in a contract could cause problems down the road.

And I am all for them.

What Did We Miss?

Texas beat Alabama (in Alabama!), and now the Longhorns have found a way into the Top 4 rankings after just two weeks.

The two toughest games remaining on the Texas schedule appear to be against #19 Oklahoma and #15 Kansas State.

It’s always fun trying to guess how Texas football will mess things up – 2023 looks like it will be especially disappointing for ‘Horns fans when it inevitably happens again.

Alabama has dropped all the way to 10th in the rankings, and it looked like they had some issues on the offensive side of the ball.

Nick Saban finishing the season outside the Top 10? The 2023 season is off to a fantastic start.
