Between New England Patriots’ head coach Bill Belichick and Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach Mike Tomlin, they have a combined seven Super Bowl Championships.

So, for Thursday Night Football in Week 14, sit back and watch the fireworks.

No, definitely not fireworks.

What’s the opposite of fireworks?

I don’t know exactly, but it’s probably whatever the Patriots and Steelers’ offenses are.

The two most popular players on the field this Thursday may be New England’s punter Bryce Baringer and Pittsburgh’s punter Pressley Harvin III.

It’s a shame that there are no prop bets available for punters.

I’ll set my very own punting yards prop lines:

PunterPunting YardsOVERUNDER
Bryce Baringer (NE)255.5 Yards-115+100
Pressley Harvin III (PIT)250.5 Yards+100-110

That’ll give me something to watch for when these offenses inevitably go three-and-out.

Let’s check out some lines for this game set by real bookmakers.

For this Thursday Night Football matchup, I’ll place a Same Game Parlay on DraftKings.

Bailey Zappe – UNDER 156.5 Passing Yards, UNDER 0.5 TD Passes AND OVER 0.5 Interceptions

In all of Zappe’s playing time this season, he has mustered a paltry 50.2 quarterback rating.

For reference, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ QB Baker Mayfield has a QB rating of 90.0, which is roughly league average in 2023, and Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers has the league’s best QB rating of 116.1.

A passer rating of 50.2 is subterranean, and Zappe is going to have to do some serious digging to get that rating back to sea level.

BestOdds EDGE projects Zappe to throw for 140 yards.

While I agree with BestOdds EDGE on Zappe going under his passing yards prop this week, EDGE may like Zappe more than I do here.

Frankly, I don’t believe Zappe will even finish this game.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Malik Cunningham gets a healthy number of snaps, too.

The Steelers have at least one interception in nine of 12 games this season, and their 12 total interceptions are tied for fifth-most in the NFL.

Zappe is going to throw one to a Pittsburgh player at some point.

Also, the Steelers have allowed only 13 touchdown passes this season, only the Baltimore Ravens, San Francisco 49ers, and Houston Texans have allowed less.

Mac Jones will have a lot of fun watching from the sidelines.

Pick: Zappe – UNDER 156.5 Passing Yards (-115 DraftKings)

Pick: Zappe – UNDER 0.5 TD Passes (-115 DraftKings)

Pick: Zappe – OVER 0.5 Interceptions (-175 DraftKings)

Mitchell Trubisky – UNDER 181.5 Passing Yards, UNDER 0.5 TD Passes AND OVER 0.5 Interceptions

Similar to Zappe, BestOdds EDGE projects Mitchell Trubisky to go under his passing yards prop.

Considering how poorly opposing quarterbacks have played against New England’s defense lately, it makes sense.

Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers only threw for 212 yards against the Patriots last week, and only Tommy DeVito of the New York Giants has thrown a touchdown against New England’s defense in the last three games.

Trubisky did alright as a fill-in for Kenny Pickett in last week’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals, going 11-for-17 with 117 yards and a touchdown.

But, throwing against a subpar Cardinals defense while facing a 24-3 deficit feels like “garbage time success”.

New England is tied with Pittsburgh in touchdown passes allowed (13), and the Patriots continue to frustrate opposing QBs with their passing defense allowing only 221.8 passing yards per game.

While I believe Trubisky is the better “starting” quarterback in this game, this game could have Pittsburgh fans looking forward to the 2024 NFL Draft.

Pick: Trubisky – UNDER 181.5 Passing Yards (-115 DraftKings)

Pick: Trubisky – UNDER 0.5 TD Passes (+175 DraftKings)

Pick: Trubisky – OVER 0.5 Interceptions (-140 DraftKings)

UNDER 30 Total Points

The Patriots and Steelers offenses being awful is not breaking news.

But, this graph from BestOdds EDGE shows that these two anemic offenses have actually been getting worse.

New England has only scored 20 points in a game twice this season, and in their 12 games, they have finished with less than 10 points five times, including in each of the last three weeks.

The Patriots are averaging an egregiously gross 4.3 points per game in the last three contests.

No guarantees that New England’s offense has hit rock bottom.

The Patriots have been shutout twice this season, and it could happen again this week against a Steelers defense that has allowed only 19.1 points per game (6th in NFL).

Pittsburgh will most likely have a hard time scoring too, considering that Trubisky is making his first start of the season, and running back Najee Harris is questionable to play with a knee injury.

Even with their full complement of starters on offense, the Steelers were averaging 16 points per game, 28th in the NFL.

That’s still better than New England though, whose scoring average sits at 12.3 this season (32nd in NFL).

Fun Fact: This game has the lowest total since Week 15 of the 1993 season, when the 2-11 New England Patriots faced the 1-12 Cincinnati Bengals.

The final score of that game was 7-2.

The Patriots-Steelers total is set this low for a reason.

Pick: Under 30 Total Points (-115 DraftKings)

Spread – Pittsburgh (-6) vs. New England

Even though I don’t see Pittsburgh scoring too many points, I don’t see New England scoring any points at all.

I just can’t trust the Patriots’ offense.

The Bailey Zappe experiment has been hard to watch, and New England has almost no dependable receivers this week.

All four of the Patriots’ leading receivers, Demario Douglas (OUT), DeVante Parker (Questionable), Kendrick Bourne (IR), JuJu Smith-Schuster (Questionable) have shown up on the injury report, and starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson is expected to miss multiple weeks.

Earlier this week, I said the final score of this game would be 10-6, Steelers.

After further research, I’ll say the final score will be 10-0, Steelers.

Pick: Steelers +6 (-108 DraftKings)
