If you are sick of making cookie-cutter moneyline bets, against the spread bets, and over/ under bets, then you’ll definitely want to learn about prop betting.
Prop betting allows the sports bettor the opportunity to wager on niche markets and individual occurrences inside and outside of the actual game.
In fact, normally, prop bets have nothing to do with the overall outcome of an event.
Since its inception, SI Sportsbook has emerged as one of my favorite operators to place prop bets with.
Not only is it backed by one of the most reputable brands in sports, but Sports Illustrated’s Sportsbook provides endless prop betting markets to choose from, which I will review later in this article.
How To Bet Props On SI Sportsbook App
While you will find different types of prop bets, the matter of placing them is very much the same at Sports Illustrated Sportsbook.
Below, I will list the generalized steps on how to place a prop bet at SI:
- Sign up for your account at Sports Illustrated.
- Find the sports menu and choose the market you want to bet on.
- Click on it and search for the actual prop inside of the game.
- Place a wager on a player prop, a team prop, or a game prop.
- Click on the prop you want to wager on and it will appear in your bet slip.
- Enter the amount you want to stake.
- Click on the “submit-bet” button and you’re off to cash a ticket.
Prop Builder
Prop builders are one of the most user-friendly tools in the sports betting market.
A prop builder will allow the customer the opportunity to create their own prop bets.
Because prop building tools are so unique, they are also very difficult to find, especially in the US market.
While the Sports Illustrated Sportsbook does not offer a prop builder, it does feature a tool that comes awfully close, which is SI’s Bet Builder tool.
What Is A Prop Bet?
In most betting circles, the term prop bet is short for proposition bet.
Instead of making a wager on the outcome of a game or an event, a prop bet allows the bettor the opportunity to have more flexibility on what they can place a wager on.
For example, with prop bets, you can place a wager on an individual player’s stats or an individual team’s stats. Prop bets don’t stop there either.
You can also find props that focus on happenings inside of a game like when the first time out will be called or if the match will go into overtime.
You can even find props that have nothing to do with the game or event at all. These are called novelty or exotic props.
Novelty props are only found around big events like the Super Bowl or March Madness. I will dive father into novelty props later in this article.
Player Props
Player props are focused on and decided by a player’s statistical performance during a game or event.
In order to cash a player prop bet ticket, the player you wager on must meet a certain statistical feat for your wager to win.
Here are a few examples of player props you will find at Sports Illustrated Sportsbook:
- Raheem Mostert to Record Over 65.5 Rushing Yards (-150)
- Kyrie Irving Under 7.5 Assists (-110)
- Patrick Kane to Score a Goal (+130)
For the above player props to cash out, Mostert must rush for 66 yards, Irving must dish out 8+ assists and Kane must score a goal in their receptive matchups.
As you can see, the overall outcome of the games is not in play here.
All those players need to do is accomplish their statistical feat for you to cash your tickets.
Team Props
Similar to player props, team props also have nothing to do with the outcome of the game.
The primary focus of a team prop bet is an individual team’s performance inside a given matchup.
Anything from whether or not a team will record over three sacks, a team to score over or under 1.5 goals in a half, or if a team will win the next quarter would be considered team props bets.
Below I will list a few more examples of team props:
- Will the Phoenix Suns score more than 24 points in the second quarter? (-120)
- Will the Dallas Cowboys record an interception against the Philadelphia Eagles? (-110)
- Will Manchester United keep a clean sheet? (-130)
To cash your team prop betting tickets, the Suns need to score 25 points in the second quarter, the Cowboys must record an interception and the United must keep a clean sheet for your to win your bets.
Those outcomes do not directly correlate with the final score of the game.
Game Props
Game prop bets are centered around events and occurrences inside and throughout a game.
Some game props you will find will include the Race to 20 points, the total number of penalty minutes, and whether or not the final score of the third quarter will finish with an odd or even number.
Here are some more examples of game props you will find at Sports Illustrated Sportsbook:
- The Orlando Magic will be the first team to score 10 points (-115)
- The Toronto Blue Jays will record more walks than their opponent (+100)
- Will the Patriots-Jets game go to Overtime? (+460)
Novelty Props
Within betting circles, you will see that novelty props are also called exotic props.
With novelty props, you will find that they have nothing to do with the outcome of the game.
They don’t even have to do with players in the event either.
Normally, novelty props are focused on events or occurrences around the game. While novelty props are fun, they aren’t around all the time.
Novelty props are usually reserved for notable events like the Super Bowl, March Madness, an upcoming election, or entertainment awards.
Here are a few examples of novelty prop bets:
- The color of the Gatorade bath at the Super Bowl will be blue (+210)
- The winner of the next presidential election will be of the Republican party (-120)
- The broadcast team will refer to Tom Brady’s retirement over 5.5 times during the Super Bowl (-110)
Prop Betting Strategy
If you want to be a profitable sports bettor, you must always have a strategy and know betting rules, especially when wagering on props because there is so much variance involved.
Sports betting is difficult enough going in blind. So the best way to give yourself an edge is by going into every wager with a plan.
Below, I will give you some of my top tips to help you become a more successful prop better in the long run:
Line Shopping
I don’t care if you are betting on a moneyline, a total, or a prop bet, if you aren’t line shopping, you are already leaving money on the table.
While it may sound like extra work to line shop, it is.
However, work isn’t easy and neither is sports betting.
Bestodds.com, we help do some of the work for you to find the best lines and odds for tonight’s slate.
If you can get Kevin Durant to score at least 25.5 points at (-110) odds at Draftkings but can find his line at 24.5 points at (+100) odds at Sports illustrated, then why in the world would you place the bet at DK?
Makes no sense. You’re leaving money on the table.
That is a prime example of why you need to have multiple sports betting accounts loaded with funds and why you must shop lines in between them.
By doing so, you will be more profitable in the long term.
Do Your Research
Your work does not stop at line shopping.
You must also do your research.
However, similar to line shopping, doing your research will be just as easy.
Be sure of today’s technology, you can find all of the stats, analytics, and historical trends you need to help you cash more tickets right at your fingertips and sometimes at the same website or app.
With so much information to help you become a more profitable prop bettor handily available, why in the world would you not give yourself that much more of an edge over the sportsbook?
Research and win now!
Know The Rules At Each Sportsbook
Every sportsbook has different rules and grades their wagers differently.
Therefore, it is imperative that you know the rules before placing a bet.
This way, you are not left wondering why your bet did not cash after it was graded when you fully thought that it would.
At some sportsbooks, they will cash a ticket if the player you bet scored a goal but did not start the game.
However, there are also some sportsbooks that require a player to start the game in order for your ticket to be cash.
For example:
- You placed a bet on Rodrigo Moreno to score a goal for Leeds United but he did not start the game.
- Rodrigo enters the game as a substitute and scores.
There are some books that will void your ticket. There are also some that will cash it.
This is why you must know the rules for each and every book.
If you are a customer at five different sportsbooks, I am sure there will be one that will cash the bet on a player who enters the game as a sub.
Propositions is a perfect bet to include in your next same game parlay at SI Sportsbook.
