In late 2023, Underdog (formerly Underdog Fantasy) drafted up a new offering for sports betting and daily fantasy sports consumers known as Underdog Pick’Em Champions.

Underdog Pick’Em Champions has grown in popularity as an intriguing blend of both sports betting and daily fantasy and has an added competitive element as a peer-to-peer contest.

Pick’Em Champions eliminates the idea of fantasy sports pick’em selections made against “The House”, pitting users against other users in a competitive guaranteed prize pool instead.

How To Play Underdog Pick’Em Champions

Underdog Champions is a game where users select two to five athletes and guess if their performance will be better or worse than a given benchmark for a certain statistic (ex: shots, hits, rebound) or collection of statistics (ex: points+rebounds+assists).

The peer-to-peer aspect of this newer feature from Underdog has users compete with others by attempting to make more accurate predictions than their fellow competitors.

You must choose athletes from at least two different teams, and you need at least two different athletes in your selections.

Other than that, you have the freedom to make any selection you wish, using your skill and knowledge to succeed in the game.

Entry fees and prizes for Pick’Em Champions games are made known in the information section of each contest prior to entry.

Step-By-Step

Once you’ve signed up or logged in to your Underdog Fantasy account, here’s how to play Underdog Pick’Em Champions.

  1. First, users must understand all of the information for each contest. Some will have different amounts of selections needed and different entry fees. Don’t make the mistake of entering a contest that you’re not prepared for or unable to comfortably afford.
  2. Next, select your preferred contest provided by Underdog, with various sports and events of your choosing, ranging from MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL, PGA and more. Be sure to select a contest of which you have a solid sports knowledge and understanding.
  3. Then, you will be provided a multitude of player prop-style over/under-like suggestions. Simply select the “higher” or “lower” on a specific athletes’ performance. Make sure you do proper research on your predictions prior to submitting.
  4. Finally, sit back and relax as your predictions unfold. The more selections you guess correctly, the closer you get to the Champions Prize.

What Prizes Can Pick’Em Champions Users Win?

The goal of Pick’Em Champions is to do better than the competition with your predictions, and users that finish with more accurate predictions than the majority of the pool – yes, there can be multiple winners – will claim a share of the Champions Prize.

Underdog awards the Champions prize to the individuals that finish atop the pool of competitors, using a daily fantasy sports-style scoring criteria.

Each peer-to-peer contest requires users to either select a certain number of athletes or provide a different entry fee. These factors will also dictate the potential prizes of each Pick’Em Champions contest.

The scoring criteria will vary from one contest to the next as well, so you should always be on the lookout for necessary information on how best to play each contest before entering.

In a typical Pick’Em Champions contest, $30,000 can be up for grabs between 50,000 or so users. The Champions Prize will be split among the top predictors.

The Champions Prize will vary from one contest to the next, as the number of entries or available winnings can fluctuate across Pick’Em Champions contests.

Underdog Pick’Em Champions – Eligible States

As state regulators attempt to draw a hard line between “fantasy sports” and “sports betting”, it appears that peer-to-peer competition provides enough separation from betting in certain jurisdictions.

The “higher” and “lower” on pick’em selections seems like a semantic battle with the over/under on traditional sportsbooks and the player projections are still provided by Underdog Fantasy; also known as “The House” in this case, so there is still quite a bit of a “fantasy vs. betting” legal gray area here.

If Underdog is available in your state, you will see a “Champions” icon near the “Drafts” icon, and when making your usual pick’em selections on Underdog, a Champions entry will become available as well, but only in eligible states.

Underdog Champions is currently being offered in the following states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming
