Traditional sports betting, such as point spreads and totals (over/unders), is entirely related to the game’s final score and outcome.
As the legalization of sports betting continues to expand across North America, so does the betting menu and types of bets now available for us to play.
Player prop betting has arrived, and sports bettors have fallen in love with betting on individual player performance and results, as well as the traditional bets we are all familiar with.
What is Player Prop Betting?
Let’s pretend that Steph Curry and his Golden State Warriors are on the road in Atlanta for a game against the Hawks.
Golden State is only 7-25 on the road this year, but on paper, their roster looks much stronger than the Hawks, who are a few games below .500 for the season.
Sometimes trying to determine the winner of a game can be challenging.
Sometimes we can have a better feel or better understanding of how a player like Steph Curry might perform compared to how a game will play out.
Therein lies the beauty of player prop betting.
Prop betting refers to a wager that is not usually associated with the outcome of a game.
If the Warriors 7-25 road record scares you, and you just don’t have confidence playing the sub-.500 Hawks to win, let’s start looking at some individual players to bet on.
Steph Curry Prop Bet Examples:
Type of Bet | Wager | Odds |
Steph Curry Total Points | S. Curry +27.5 Total Points | Over -115 | Under -105 |
Steph Curry Total 3-Pointers | S. Curry +4.5 Total 3- Pointers | Over -120 | Under +100 |
Steph Curry Total Assists | St. Curry +6.5 Total Assists | Over -105 | Under -115 |
Our table above is an example of some potential Steph Curry player prop bets.
Instead of deciding whether Golden State can cover the -2-point spread on the road in Atlanta, we can instead focus on the performance of the Warriors superstar.
BestOdds Edge Prop Cheat Sheet
With hundreds of player props offered on any given night, a bettor will need help narrowing down the props with the biggest edge against the sportsbooks.
The BestOdds Edge player prop betting section analyzes thousands of different data points for us and will provide a projected edge for each prop bet.
Bettors can quickly narrow down the props to focus on based on the size of the edge being determined by the system.
In our example above, the BestOdds Edge proprietary algorithm has determined a 31% edge if we bet James Harden Under +22.5 points.
31% is a very large edge and definitely worth exploring further.
As always, the system will provide lots of information about Harden and his prop bets in clean, easy-to-understand graphics. Above, we can see all that red compared to only a few bars of green.
This graph tells us Harden has gone Under +22.5 points in 8 of his last 10 games.
Expanded Player Profile Pages
Individual player profile pages provide highly detailed stats and data regarding a player’s performance in relation to the prop bet being offered.
One of the most popular features of all player profile pages is their trends section.
Bettors have many different trend options they can sift through to help them with their prop betting analysis and decision-making.
Another great feature of these individual profile pages is that the information for all prop bets available on one player can be found in one location.
Sometimes a player like James Harden could have upwards of five, six or more different prop bets available.
With BestOdds Edge, we can jump to the James Harden profile page and research all the available Harden prop bets from that one location.
BestOdds Edge – Similar Player Data
Another feature that will save bettors lots of time and energy is how the BestOdds Edge platform will research other players similar to James Harden and show how they have performed recently against the team Harden will be playing. (Boston)
In our graphic above, the system has identified Trae Young after the Atlanta Hawks recently lost to the Boston Celtics in a six-game playoff series.
Bettors looking to project how Harden will do against Boston can use Trae Young’s data to help with their analysis of Harden.
Trae Young and James Harden are different players, but comparing how one did against the Celtics will help us understand how the other could perform against them.
This is another case of the system providing more information than expected to help us form our player prop betting decisions.
