Before the 2020/21 Serie A season, Juventus had ruled the land for 9 consecutive seasons, but Inter Milan rallied and broke the Old Lady’s dominance by winning the Scudetto last season.

This was Inter’s first league title in 11 years, and they’ll be hoping to build on last season’s league dominance.

However, both Inter and Juventus—the bookies’ favorites before the start of the Serie A season—have had significant squad changes.

Both teams have new managers, and both were forced to sell their main attackers—Romelu Lukaku and Cristiano Ronaldo.

This paves the way for teams like Napoli, Ac Milan, and As Roma to step in and challenge for the title, assuring us that a thrilling and unpredictable season awaits.

Here’s our Serie A 2021/22 betting preview.

How Is The Winner Decided?

The team with the most points at the end of the Serie A season finishes first and wins the Scudetto.

Since two or more Serie A teams can have the same number of points, tiebreakers are needed in such situations to separate tied teams. In Serie A, the priority tiebreaker isn’t goal difference but head-to-head points.

This means that head-to-head games involving the tied teams will be prioritized so that the tie can be broken,

If the teams are still tied after that initial tiebreaker, these other tiebreakers will come into play in the listed order:

  1. Goal difference in head-to-head matches.
  2. Overall goal difference.
  3. Number of goals scored.

Serie A Betting Odds Report

After winning the Scudetto last season, Inter Milan will want to prove that they can do it again.

This time, they’ll have to do it without the services of Romelu Lukaku and Antonio Conte.

But as many as six teams will be looking to stop Inter’s title defense, and this means that we may be in for an exhilarating title race.

So, despite the numerous departures in Serie A, there are still a lot of great additions that are destined to spice up the league.

The Favorites

Inter Milan – After winning the league last season, Inter Milan is the team to beat this season. Nerazzurri hadn’t won the league since their treble-winning season, but Antonio Conte led the team to the Scudetto in his second and final season.

However, if Inter wants to challenge for the land’s top honors again, they’ll need to do it without many of last season’s star players. Romelu Lukaku left for Chelsea, and right back Achraf Hakimi joined a star-studded PSG side. Head Coach Antonio Conte also left the club and was replaced by Simone Inzaghi.

They still have a squad that can challenge for back-to-back titles. Star striker Lautaro Martínez is still at the club, and they also signed full-back Denzel Dumfries, who was one of Euro 2020’s breakout stars.

Hakan Calhanoglu also joined the club from rivals Ac Milan, and Edin Dzeko was signed by Roma and will have the burden of filling Lukaku’s shoes.

Juventus – For the first time in 9 years, Juventus aren’t the defending champions. The Old Lady struggled last season and almost failed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League, but a late-season surge helped them clinch 4th place and also helped them win the Coppa Italia.

This season, they’ll be without star striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who left for Manchester United, but Massimiliano Allegri is back at the helm.

Allegri has a good record with Juventus. Despite being sacked in 2019, he had previously led Juventus to 5 straight league titles from 2015 to 2019, plus two Champions League Finals in 2015 and 2017. So he’ll be hoping to replicate such feats this season.

Though they don’t have the talents of Ronaldo to look forward to, star players such as Federico Chiesa and Paulo Dybala are expected to fill the void.

S.S.C. Napoli – Napoli have come close to winning the league in recent years, but they’ve been thwarted by Juventus on multiple occasions. Gli Azzurri hasn’t won the league since the days of Diego Maradona, but this may be their best opportunity yet.

With clubs such as Inter and Juventus looking like they may struggle this season, Napoli can take advantage of such situations. Last season, they almost finished fourth, but they lost on the final day of the season and gave up their Champions League position to Juventus.

If they want to chase for the league’s top honors, then they’ll need to avoid such inconsistencies this season.

Though they haven’t made any major signings, players like Victor Osimhen, Lorenzo Insigne, and Dries Mertens can still supply the goals and assists that the club needs to challenge for the title.

A.C. Milan – Milan hasn’t won the league since the 2010/11 season, so they have a lot to do if they want to end their 10-year title drought. Last season, they started well and it looked like they were the team to beat.

They ended the first half of the season as Winter Champions, but lackluster performances in the second half of the season made them surrender their once unattainable lead to rivals Inter.

They eventually finished 2nd last season, which was their best league ranking in over 9 years. They also finished in the top four for the first time since the 2012/13 season.

AC Milan invested in a lot of defensive players during the summer transfer window, and they’ll be hoping that such players can lead them to the summit of Serie A.

The Contenders

Atalanta B.C. – Under Coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Atalanta has proven to be one of Serie A’s best attacking teams. They’ve consistently been one of the top-scoring teams in the league in the past few seasons, and they’ve gained plaudits from critics for their entertaining style of play.

They may score a lot of goals, but the team’s weakness is that they concede a lot as well. If they can fix their defensive problems, then a title charge may be well within their sights.

Atalanta has finished third in the past three consecutive seasons, and they’ll be hoping for a similar or better league ranking this season.

AS Roma – Jose Mourinho is back in the Serie A, this time with AS Roma. The last time that the Portuguese manager coached an Italian team, he led them to the treble.

He may not have such high expectations in his first season with Roma, but he’ll definitely want to make sure that AS Roma is the title challenger once again.

The Rome-based club finished 7th last season, which is something that Jose Mourinho will definitely want to improve.

SS Lazio – Lazio is another Rome-based club that has been in and out of the title race in recent seasons.

They were Juve’s main title challengers in the 2019/20 season, but they eventually finished fourth after dropping points in the latter stages of the season. Last season, they finished in 6th place.

This season, they have a new coach: Maurizio Sarri. Sarri’s most recent stint was with Juventus; he led the Old Lady to the title in the 2019/20 season.

ACF Fiorentina – I Viola haven’t won the Scudetto since 1969.

They’ve been in and out of the top four in the past 10 seasons, though they’ve proved to be more of a mid-table club in recent seasons.

Last season, they finished in 14th place, something that new coach Vincenzo Italiano will be eager to improve.

U.S. Sassuolo Calcio – Sassuolo have never won the league, but they’ve always been an entertaining team to watch. They finished 8th last season, and their most realistic target this season will be to finish in the top six.
