A prop or proposition bet is a sports betting wager not tied to a game’s final score or outcome.

Prop bet examples can include but are not limited to:

  • Stats obtained by individual players
  • Which team scores first
  • Which player scores first
  • Points scored in a particular quarter
  • Color of the Gatorade dumped on the winning coach
  • Length of time for the national anthem

What Are Player Prop Bets?

Player props are bets on specific players and specific stat categories and are undoubtedly the most popular type of prop bet.

Typically, these player prop bets will be either an over or an under bet on a particular stat line.

For example, the oddsmakers may set a prop line of 75.5 receiving yards for Tyreek Hill.,

You can bet whether Tyreek will go Over or Under 75.5 receiving yards.

  • The Over wins if the player records 76 or more receiving yards in the game.
  • Obviously, the Under wins if the player finishes with 75 or fewer yards in the game.

How Are Prop Lines Set?

Each player will have appropriate prop lines based on their skill level, consistency, matchup, and bookmaker’s expectation.

The sportsbooks will release prop lines based on their internal handicapping and how they expect the market to react.

The most common player props often have more accurate lines, such as

  • Passing yards
  • Passing touchdowns
  • Rushing yards
  • NBA points scored
  • Rebounds
  • MLB strikeouts
  • And more

Player Prop Bet Example

Here is a Passing Yards prop bet for Joe Burrow, the quarterback for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Odds – Joe Burrow Passing Yards – +267.5 – Over -120 | Under +100

Looking at the example bet above, the sportsbook has set Burrow’s passing yards total at +267.5 yards.

Burrow must pass for 268 yards or more if we like the Over.

It’s also important to look at the odds associated with each side. In our case above, Sportsbooks have juiced the Over side, meaning a bettor would have to wager $1.20 to win $1.00.

However, Burrow to go Under his total is even money (+100).

Why Prop Bets?

There is more value or edge for the sports bettor in betting player props than betting point spreads, moneylines, or team totals.

Why?

There are so many players, and player props are relatively new in comparison.

The sportsbooks have a more challenging time accurately determining an appropriate stat line for every player which means more opportunities for astute sports bettors.

The books and oddsmakers are very good at pricing team point spread and predicting who will win. It is a science that has been mastered over the last few decades.

Player props are new, and there are TONS of players, matchup nightmares, and obscure stat lines to find gems.

We hunt for that information at BestOdds.com and have built the tools to help you identify bets with value and an edge.
